I spent the Christmas with my sister's family and enjoyed some quality time with my nephew. He was talking animatedly about his recent skating accident and showing off his scrapped elbow. But, then all of a sudden, he tried licking his elbow. I was a bit taken aback and asked him what was he doing. He said," I am licking my wound just like the animals do when they are hurt".
This got me thinking about saliva and its healing properties. I've heard that animals use their saliva to heal wounds. But, is there any truth in that? And, does human saliva have healing properties too? As it turns out, saliva has protein based tissue factor that helps in clotting mechanism . Also, saliva provides moist and humid environment that is essential for inflammatory cells to perform their healing functions.
